Over to France

Bonjour and thank you for stopping by. My name is Renie and this is the story of my first trip (avec mon mari) to France. We flew into Paris and then journeyed south-eastward by car, through so many beautiful villages, to arrive in Nice. It was four weeks of amazingness. We were totally smitten and our lives have been forever changed! If you would like to have a peek at what we experienced, then please read on….. And if you would like to venture further with us, as we work out our future Over to France adventures, then please read on a bit further still…

The House that Béatrice Built

Béatrice de Rothschild was born in 1864. Her father was the baron, Alphonse de Rothschild, a banker and renowned art collector and her mother was Leonora, a Rothschild too, but on the English side of the family, so that was all above board.

Although born into immense wealth and privilege, Béatrice also sufferred much sadness in her life, particulary due to an unfortunate marriage and her inability to have children (apparently she contracted a “serious illness” from her husband, Maurice – grrr!). Maurice Ephrussi was a gambler and in 1904, his debts totalled over 12 million gold francs. They divorced in June 1904, after 21 years of marriage.

Following her father’s death in 1905, Béatrice inherited his immense fortune and decided to have a house built in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, a place she loved. She employed Architect Jacques-Marcel Auburtin and many other experts to construct the house and extensive gardens between 1907 and 1912. She was a lady who loved beautiful things and the Ephrussi de Rothschild villa and gardens are certainly testament to this. We spent a wonderful couple of hours here, looking through each room and wandering the gardens. It was all magnificent.

And that was only the inside. The outside was just as stunning.

After grabbing some lunch from our local patisserie (have I mentioned how much I now love quiche lorraine?!) we took a deep breath or two and embarked on le Sentier du Littoral – which translated basically means a coastal walk – from our place in Villefranche-sur-mer and around Cap Ferrat. I wished I could have had eyes in the back of my head as well as the front, because the views were so stunning – everywhere! This is a little bit of what we saw – although I know I simply can’t do it justice.

We certainly all got our steps in today, but it was so worth it.

And after a day of magnificence we came home and I brought the washing in, folding it there on the balcony, overlooking the mediterranean sea, with the swallows beginning to swoop, listening to the voices of two little girls in the house next to ours singing children’s songs in French – and then the church bells began to ring. Sigh.

    1. Those gardens were so beautiful Rache. There is lots of jasmine in flower at the moment, so I’m really enjoying smelling it all over the place. xxx

  2. What a telescopic, colorful picture your words paint of your experiences. I feel the atmosphere, take in the aquatic aroma and the glorious perfumes of the flowers. Feel the cool breeze on the warm air as you walk a magical pathway through the romantic hillside. I’m thrilled that at last you have been able to live your dream so much better than I had ever imagined.

    1. Your comments are quite amazing Julie. That’s exactly what it was like. The fragrance of the jasmine, a touch of salt from the sea and then the strange feeling of being so hot walking around the cape but having slight wafts of cool air coming up from ocean below. I keep feeling like I am walking through the different scenes of a movie. xx

  3. Hi to you both, Thanks so much for the absolutely beautiful photos of the Ephrussi de Rothchild villa and garden. So lovely to see. We can almost picture ourselves there. Great to also see that the weather has been so perfect for you and that you can get your washing done then taken in in the most beautiful surroundings. Thanks also Renie for your very interesting travelogues. Mum and I enjoy reading them over and over again. Heather and the girls came up for the afternoon yesterday. Heather had brought a tin wistle and it was great to hear her play a few tunes. We are very fortunate to have a musical family. Lots of love Dad (& Mum)

    1. Oh I would love to hear Heather play that tin whistle. Yes, so very grateful for the love of music that you’ve instilled in us kids.
I messaged you and Mum as soon as I entered the Rothchild gardens. I knew you would both be asleep but I was just overcome by the feeling of wanting you both to be there with me. So then I started videoing it for awhile, just so I could try and give you a taste of what it was like. Will show it to you when we get back. xxx
