Over to France

Bonjour and thank you for stopping by. My name is Renie and this is the story of my first trip (avec mon mari) to France. We flew into Paris and then journeyed south-eastward by car, through so many beautiful villages, to arrive in Nice. It was four weeks of amazingness. We were totally smitten and our lives have been forever changed! If you would like to have a peek at what we experienced, then please read on….. And if you would like to venture further with us, as we work out our future Over to France adventures, then please read on a bit further still…

The Nice Weather…

was nowhere to be seen this morning. Not long after we left on the last leg of our journey south to Nice, the rain set in. It was a six hour (plus) drive and the bad weather lasted for quite a bit of it. But we still saw some lovely sights all the same.

I had really hoped to visit La Pitchoune, in the provençal village of Plascassier today. La Pitchoune was a holiday house built in the early 1960s by Julia Child (the American cook who fell in love with French food and mastered the art of cooking it) and her husband Paul. I’ve been a bit of a fan since childhood.

My very brave husband managed to navigate the unnervingly narrow streets in order to find Julia’s cottage for me. It is now a cooking school and not actually open to the public. However, I quietly walked up the driveway and took a few photos of the outside. I would have loved to go in and see her wall with the pans and utensils all hung up so magestically – but alas, I could hear American voices inside discussing cooking and movie-making and I couldn’t find the courage to interrupt. It was enough to stand there and look, knowing that Julia had been here.

The weather had thankfully cleared up in time for our visit to La Pitchoune, and Keith, Margaret, Mike and Durelle were already at our accommodation in Nice and sending us photos of beautiful weather down there too. So with much hope we continued on, again along the scenic route – not the most direct but certainly worth it in our opinion. Seeing the Mediterranean Sea for the first time was quite a buzz for us both!

We then drove up the beautiful winding streets to our accommodation, to find Mike on the doorstep looking out for us and the others not far behind. It was such a lovely welcome and just so great to see our friends again. We have been talking about this trip together for so long, it seems surreal that we are actually all here together in this most fabulous place. We are extremely grateful for them and for all of this.

This is the view from our accommodation. I keep wanting to poke my finger into the air over the balcony to make sure it’s real and not just a picture!

Bonne nuit from Nice, where the weather really is very, very nice.

    1. Thanks Sashie. After all the rain and cold weather we have had in France, it was actually a bit too hot here in Nice at 7am, and we had icecream at 10:30am!
You and Maia would love it here Sash. I really hope you get to visit here one day.

  2. Hi to you both, Firstly I just want to acknowledge and thank you Clive for all your safe, careful driving virtually every day of your holiday culminating in a six hour, wet weather, drive to Nice yesterday. We think you have done a great job, even navigating unnerving narrow streets to find Julia Child’s cottage.. You can now take it a bit easier for the rest of your holiday. Thanks heaps Renie for the WhatsAp call last evening. It was great to be able to see you so clearly all the way from Nice and in lovely sunshine. The view from your balcony is terrific. I loved seeing that large ship in the bay which is the same one you sent us a photo of. It’s great that you have been able to meet up with your friends and can enjoy the rest of your holiday together. Lots of love.

    1. Thanks Dad. I passed your comments on to Clive and he appreciates them. He’s done a good job of looking after us both.
There seems to have been a big cruise ship come into the harbour each day so far. They arrive early morning, ferry the passengers to shore on smaller boats and then leave late in the evening. No matter how many stories I hear of how wonderful cruises are, I don’t think Mum or I would ever handle them. Not enough sea leg tablets in the world!. xxx

    1. I really with I could bottle it!
Yes, isn’t it such a beautiful colour? I felt like I was in a postcard. The light all around was sometimes a different colour too. Maybe a pinkish/blueish tint to it? It was magic.
