Over to France

Bonjour and thank you for stopping by. My name is Renie and this is the story of my first trip (avec mon mari) to France. We flew into Paris and then journeyed south-eastward by car, through so many beautiful villages, to arrive in Nice. It was four weeks of amazingness. We were totally smitten and our lives have been forever changed! If you would like to have a peek at what we experienced, then please read on….. And if you would like to venture further with us, as we work out our future Over to France adventures, then please read on a bit further still…

Valence on a Saturday

People, Parc & Puppies

Hello and bonjour to you. We are in Valence for the next two days and I was hoping to visit another market, being as it was a Saturday (although markets seem to be held on various different days throughout the week here in France). Markets anywhere in the world are wonderful places, not only to see a variety of products and produce but also people. This is some of what we saw this morning at the market, ten minutes walk from our little place in Central Valence.

Lunch today was a poulet and fromage-filled baguette “coupe en deux, s’il vous plait” (which means “cut in half, please” because they are so big), and a pastry each, from La Mie Caline or The Crumb Cuddle. Isn’t that just a wee bit cute? By the way, ou sont tous les toilettes publiques en France? For a place where people seem to drink an awful lot of coffee and wine, one would expect to see them on every street corner. Mais non.

A few streets away from the market is Le Parc Jouvet. (I’ve called on Clive again for this next bit….) Valence used to be a walled town and was designated as a military stronghold. In the 1700s it was the site of an artillery school. Due to its close vicinity to the town, the citizens complanied about the noise and the danger of flying canon balls (understandable!). The authorities convinced the artiliary school to move and intended to buy the land for a park. The funds however, were not so easily found. Fortunately a local businesman by the name of Theodore Jouvet, offered to purchase the land for the town and the park was named after him. If you look closely at the photo of the cliff face you will see the ruins of a thirteen century castle, which used to be the stronghold controlling the Rhone river and valley.

And now we are pooped. It’s exhausting stuff this being on holiday business.

P.S. Sasha did you spot the photo of the frog?

  1. Absolutely Fabulous!! Yay for adventuring so much that you are pooped at the end of the day. It looks like it’s still pretty chilly, but nice weather. So much to see and experience that is different from at home!

    1. Hi Rache. Yes, I was saying to Clive today that everything is interesting here, even going to the supermarket. Just walking out our front door is interesting! That’s the wonderful thing about travelling I guess. xxx

  2. Dear Renie, The photos are really good, and we can imagine ourselves there. So interesting to see the stuff they sell in the markets. And it’s OK for men to have shopping trundlers. The children look nice. Is the weather cool? People seem to be warmly dressed. Your accommodation looks comfortable. Good to see Clive taking it easy after all the walking around. The weather here is so wet day after day. We are glad you are missing it. Have a good time, and look after yourselves. All our love, Mum (and Dad) xxxxx

    1. Hi Mum. Yes the weather has been surprisingly cool for the most part. Today was the first time we felt really warm, probably because we were walking up quite a slope. But it also felt fairly humid too for the first time since we’ve been here. Lots of people use trundlers here. And lots of people ride bicycles with baskets (and acutally have baguettes in them – it really is a thing!). So sorry you’ve had some much rain. We came across some shoes today that might come in handy. I’ll put photos of them in my next post. Love you lots. xxx

  3. Hi, Aunty Reenie and Clive. I did see the photo of the frog hiding in the bushes. I looks like you had a great time in Valence. It’s great you got to have a look around in the market. The statue of the lying down person was cool. I noticed that castle in the mountain and it looked quite camouflage with the rocks around it. I hope you’ll have many more great days in France. Love from: Sasha
