Over to France

Bonjour and thank you for stopping by. My name is Renie and this is the story of my first trip (avec mon mari) to France. We flew into Paris and then journeyed south-eastward by car, through so many beautiful villages, to arrive in Nice. It was four weeks of amazingness. We were totally smitten and our lives have been forever changed! If you would like to have a peek at what we experienced, then please read on….. And if you would like to venture further with us, as we work out our future Over to France adventures, then please read on a bit further still…

Truly Fixin

If I had to leave France tomorrow, I would say “That’s ok, my heart is full.” Although, I don’t want to leave, and straight away I would ask “When are we coming back?”. But today was an especially lovely day. I feel so privileged to have experienced it. It filled me up.

We have been staying in a dear village named Fixin (pronounced “Fisson”). It is a village surrounded by vineyards. I suspect many of the residents either own one of the vineyards, or are involved in the industry in some form.

We walked through a good part of it this morning. It was incredibly peaceful – maybe everyone was already at work, and the kids at school. But there was mostly just us, and the birds, and one grand-mere going for a walk with her petit fils (grandson).

We hadn’t finished the walking trail through Dijon yesterday, and I still wanted to visit the famous Dijon mustard shop, Moutarde Maille. So we ventured back into the city and managed to find a park. This time, I was armed with umbrella in handbag and snacks in pocket just in case.

Moutarde Maille has such a delicious range of dijon mustards and oils. While the factory is not open to tours at the moment due to “hygiene restrictions” (I’m guessing Covid etc?), we were able to enjoy a great many samples.

We then followed some more of the historic trail walk. Dijon city felt a lot nicer today. Having a full tummy and some lovely weather makes all the difference!

But the best part of today was our late afternoon stroll through the rest of Fixin, and also parts of neighbouring villages, Fixey and Bouchin. Walking through the vineyards and streets as the sun was getting lower was just beautiful. We came across a church in Fixey, L’eglise Romane de Fixey, that was built in the tenth century – that’s pretty old! And as we stood there, the bells starting ringing. It was so amazing, I cried.

  1. Dear Renie and Clive, Did you notice on that restaurant billboard that the French do not seem to have a word for Happy Hour? I’ve seen that brand of mustard up in our local supermarket. Probably very expensive. We are enjoying your journey. Lots of love, Mum (& Dad) xxx

    1. Yes, it’s funny how English words are slotted in amongst French. I saw a road stop sign today, that said STOP in English. Maybe it was just for tourists! xx

  4. Hello, Aunty Reenie and uncle Clive. It’s great to hear about the sunny weather there in Fixin. I would have loved to be traveling between those quiet buildings in Fixin. It also seemed like another great time in Dijon and It’s great you got to see that mustard and oil factory! From Sasha

    1. Hi Sashie, the vineyards all around Fixin village reminded me of when Uncle Clive and I popped in to visit Uncle Mark, Aunty Melissa and Cosette. They would feel right at home here I’m sure. It was most magical experience to be right next to that very old church as the bells started ringing. I managed to record a bit of it, so I will play it to you when we get back. Hope school is going ok. xx
